PHILADELPHIA PA – This November, F.A.N. Gallery presents an exhibition of new landscape paintings by Philadelphia artist Kate Kern Mundie. Kate Kern Mundie: Recent Paintings, the artistís first major solo exhibition in a commercial gallery, features more than two dozen new works from rural and urban locations in and around Philadelphia, Washington DC, St. Louis, London, Paris and Amsterdam.

The exhibition begins November 7th and continues through November 29th, 2008. An opening reception will take place on Friday, November 7th from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public. F.A.N. Gallery is located at 221 Arch Street in Philadelphia PA. For exhibition hours and information, please visit

Kate Kern Mundie's paintings are the result of daily observations and recent travel. “I am constantly intrigued by the world around me,” Mundie says, “whether it is a building I pass every day or a new scene in a foreign city.” Executed with deft brushstrokes and lush color, Mundieís paintings often depict unexpected views of the urban landscape. Following in the tradition of American masters George Bellows, John Sloan, and Edward Hopper, Kate Kern Mundie finds beauty where others may only see blight. For her, an abandoned industrial site demands and receives the same amount of attention as the cathedral of Notre Dame.

At present, Mundie is exploring color harmonies and systems to isolate and describe those elements of the landscape that catch her eye. “The paintings have become more about the ‘idea&lrquo; of a space or scene rather than a literal interpretation,” Mundie says. “I am taking liberties with the subject matter, using color and design to give the painting a dream-like atmosphere.”

In describing the appeal of Ms. Mundie's work, Fraidoon Al-Nakib, founder and owner of F.A.N. Gallery, says, “Kate Mundie's paintings express a love of the city of Philadelphia and its quality of light and architecture. Philadelphia's buildings reflect their roots in European architecture, some of which Kate has recently explored and displays here beside their American cousins. Her use of rich, juicy color wonderfully depicts light and shadow, making the viewer aware of the visual elements in the city that are often overlooked. Kate Mundie's paintings,” says Mr. Al-Nakib, “help the viewer see what is so wonderful about the city.”

Kate Kern Mundie is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. Mundie lives in South Philadelphia with husband James and their newborn son, Declan. For examples of her work, please visit

F.A.N. Gallery resides in the heart of historic Old City Philadelphia, in a Colonial building that dates back to the 1740s. Since it was founded by Fraidoon Al-Nakib in 1991, the F.A.N. Gallery has established a reputation for exhibiting the work of emerging and established artists who explore color, tone and atmosphere in the classic traditions of American painting. F.A.N. Gallery's artists introduce innovative contemporary themes and imagery of the urban environment, dreams and memory, and personal experience. For more information, please visit the gallery's website:
