On a recent trip to northeastern Pennsylvania, we stopped off in the Lehigh Gorge State Park in
Carbon County near Jim Thorpe. All around the Lehigh River as it winds through the mountains are
hiking trails, old train tracks and tunnels, and great scenery for painting and drawing.
As I was drawing by the river a fisherman stopped over to check my progress. He was happy that I
had put “the hole in the wall” in my composition (the black void on the left hand side
of the drawing). That hole is an abandoned train tunnel that once connected to a bridge over the
river. All that remains of that bridge are the old pilings in the river.
