Contemporary artist Kate Kern Mundie brings an exhibition of her recent explorations in painting and drawing to the Jersey shore with the exhibition Land and Sea at the Ocean City Arts Center during the month of August. From 3 through 28 August, Ms. Mundie will present more than twenty of her plein air depictions of southern New Jersey, Cape Cod and the Philadelphia region in oil and pastel. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, 13 August 2005, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Both the reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

Kate Kern Mundie is most interested in color and spaces, and the landscape in particular. In her paintings Mundie wishes to convey how one object relates to another within the composition and also the way in which the viewer forms relations to those elements. Mundie tries to capture a moment in time, or a quality of light. Mundie has said, “I know the painting is finished to my satisfaction when it ‘feels’ like the day I started it, when the colors remind me of the air, temperature, and light of that place. I want the subject of the paintings to feel familiar and to evoke memories in the viewer.”

Kate Kern Mundie is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. Mundie’s work has been exhibited widely at many locations including: The Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial, Main Line Art Center, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia Sketch Club, Richard Stockton College, and Wellesley College, among others.
