When the weather is too cold or rainy I turn to interiors and still life painting – but I approach it in the same way I would a landscape. I am concerned with light, color and mood. I don’t want the painting to feel too enclosed and crowded with objects. I want to focus on just a few things, so I leave out most furnishings and focus on the light on the walls and floors and, in this painting, the lantern hanging in the corner.
