I have normally painted on Cape Cod in summer, however this past year I went up in the early autumn.
I was amazed at the difference in color and value from one season to the next.
The colors of summer are darker and more vibrant, with greater variety of tones. Both color and form are more
crisply defined. But in the fall, the colors were muted and more golden. Everything was more subtle.
I struggled to pull out definition in the forms I saw. It was a great challenge.
This is a view looking west across the marsh toward the Pamet Harbor on the bay side of the cape. I stood on
slight causeway, surrounded by blue herons and poison ivy. The building to the left in the distance is the
harbor master's office. During the summer of 2002, I stood beside that building and created several other paintings, including
Pamet Harbor at Low Tide.
