This painting was done at Highland Orchards in West Chester, Pennsylvania. When I taught first grade
we would bring the students here for apple picking field trips every autumn. Highland grows apples,
cherries, strawberries, raspberries and pumpkins, and also has a little farm stand.
It was a hot Sunday afternoon in late August. I bought a big slice of watermelon from the farm stand and
then headed into the cherry orchard. I did this looking southeast and then in the last light
of the evening I did a pastel drawing looking southwest.
