oil on paper, 15 x 22 inches, 2002 Collection of Bruce Marshall
This painting was a real growing experience for me. Rendering the marsh and capturing all the
different shades of blue water and sky was a challenge. This was painted on Cape Cod standing on a
sandy bluff — really more of a cliff — that provides a commanding view of the surrounding
landscape, Atlantic Ocean, Pilgrim Lake and Massachusetts Bay. I have returned to this same location several
times (for instance, I painted Route 6 from
this same spot the following summer).
While painting here one is exposed to all the elements. I stood on white sand with the wind blowing
and absolutely no shade. That first time I got a reflective sunburn from the sand under my shirt and
shorts. This was an important lesson in sunblock application. I now slather sunblock everywhere before
I get dressed to go out painting.
